چکیده

We use the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) to determine the concentrations of the trace gases CO, O3, NH3, and formic acid (HCOOH) within boreal biomass burning plumes. We focus on 22 plumes observed by TES between June 15 and July 15, 2008 as part of the summer Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites (ARCTAS-B) campaign. Only four of these plumes show evidence of enhanced ozone, and even in these cases the enhanced ozone may be due to intrusions of stratospheric air. We use TES retrievals of NH3 and HCOOH within the smoke plumes to calculate their enhancement ratios relative to CO. Our preliminary analysis suggests TES can observe PAN within boreal biomass burning plumes, but further work is needed to test the robustness of this result. We find that TES is unlikely to be able to detect HCN within most smoke

Emission Ratios for Ammonia and Formic Acid and Observations of Peroxy Acetyl Nitrate (PAN) and Ethylene in Biomass Burning Smoke as Seen by the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES)

We use the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) aboard the NASA Aura satellite to determine the concentrations of the trace gases ammonia (NH3) and formic acid (HCOOH) within boreal biomass burning plumes, and present the first detection of peroxy acetyl nitrate (PAN) and ethylene (C2H4) by TES. We focus on two fresh Canadian plumes observed by TES in the summer of 2008 as part of the Arcti...

Ozone photochemistry in boreal biomass burning plumes

We present an analysis of ozone (O3) photochemistry observed by aircraft measurements of boreal biomass burning plumes over eastern Canada in the summer of 2011. Measurements of O3 and a number of key chemical species associated with O3 photochemistry, including non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and total nitrogen containing species (NOy), were made from the UK FAAM BAe-14...

Nitrogen oxides and PAN in plumes from boreal fires during ARCTAS-B and their impact on ozone: an integrated analysis of aircraft and satellite observations

We determine enhancement ratios for NOx, PAN, and other NOy species from boreal biomass burning using aircraft data obtained during the ARCTAS-B campaign and examine the impact of these emissions on tropospheric ozone in the Arctic. We find an initial emission factor for NOx of 1.06 g NO per kg dry matter (DM) burned, much lower than previous observations of boreal plumes, and also one third th...

ACE-FTS Observations of Pyrogenic Trace Species in Boreal Biomass Burning Plumes During BORTAS

To further our understanding of the effects of biomass burning emissions on atmospheric composition, the BORTAS campaign (BOReal forest fires on Tropospheric oxidants over the Atlantic using Aircraft and Satellites) was conducted on 12 July to 3 August 2011 during the boreal forest fire season in Canada. The simultaneous aerial, ground and satellite measurement campaign sought to record instanc...

Airborne observations of trace gases over boreal Canada during BORTAS: campaign climatology, air mass analysis and enhancement ratios

In situ airborne measurements were made over eastern Canada in summer 2011 as part of the BORTAS experiment (Quantifying the impact of BOReal forest fires on Tropospheric oxidants over the Atlantic using Aircraft and Satellites). In this paper we present observations of greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) and other biomass burning tracers (CO, HCN and CH3CN), both climatologically and through case s...
